Chapter Twelve

“Mayor Greenlund.” Cassandra wasn’t sure what else to say. Clearly, she’d been rude and offensive and intrusive.

Megan walked inside with Fred, “We only have a few minutes,” she said, stopping in the entryway. Fred sat down, but his eyes were focused on the large man in the room. He didn’t look away from Mayor Greenlund even for a second.

Cassandra walked in behind them, feeling foolish but also relieved. How else could she feel? She was being given the chance to speak to both of them together… but she’d also offended them so badly, she doubted they would say much, if anything.

“Tell me what you’re trying to accomplish by coming here.” The mayor stood across the entryway from them in a t-shirt and flannel pajama pants. The shirt stretched against his burly arms when he crossed them.

“I came out because I feel like there’s not enough being done to find the people mentioned in the article innocent,” Cassandra said. “We’re all just kind of guilty. Meanwhile, I’m sure someone out there believes they’ve gotten off scot-free.”

Greenlund sighed, shifting his weight from one bare foot to the other. “I appreciate your answer, but that wasn’t my question. Let me be more specific. What are you doing here at Celeste’s house?”

“Oh… well.” Cassandra looked from him to Celeste. She seemed to have recovered from her anger and was now perfectly in control. She doubted the beautiful woman lost her grip on her professionalism very often. “I was given the address, and I felt I had no other leads.” She gestured to him. “You wouldn’t talk to me with any sort of depth over the phone, and your office has been empty all day. We even tried the beachfront office, but it’s locked up tight. And honestly, if we weren’t going to be able to talk to you, I had hoped your secretary would be able to provide me with—”

“With what?” He interrupted, red-faced and chest lifting with every breath. He hadn’t yet gained the control his secretary had so easily gathered. “Dirt? Searching for a little town gossip? Because that would definitely take the focus off yourself, now, wouldn’t it?” His eyes strayed from her to Megan. “It would take the focus off both of you.” His jaw clenched in the stretch of silence that followed, and then he seemed to relax a bit, appearing rather cocky. “My wife and I are separated.” He watched them as if expecting total surprise. “We have been for nearly a year now, and there’s little hope of reconciliation. If I have formed a close professional friendship with Celeste, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.”

Cassandra’s anger flared so intensely, she had to bite her tongue to keep from responding. There were so many things she wanted to shout back at him, but it would end any chance at further conversation… and she couldn’t risk it. She saw Megan glance over at her, but she couldn’t move. Not yet.

“We spoke with your wife an hour ago,” Megan said.
